African bullfrog

Pyxicephalus adspersus

The name of the African bullfrog originated from the fact, that when an African bullfrog feels threatened, they make an alarm call that sounds like the roar of an ox.

The African bullfrog is one of the largest frog species in the world. The size of the frogs are important during mating season, where the males fight to win the females favor. The fighting ritual is the reason why males are significantly larger than the females. Large males sometimes swallow small males during the fights. After the mating, the females can lay up to 4,000 eggs in pools of water. Hereafter it is the males’ task to take care of the eggs, which is very demanding, therefore the males will sometimes eat some of the eggs or tadpoles in order to get energy enough.
