Sitatunga

Tragelaphus spekii gratus

The sitatunga is an antelope living in swamps and humid areas. The males are dark brown with impressive twisting horns while the females are light brown. The sitatunga has long hooves which it can spread out to prevent it from sinking into the ground.

The sitatunga’s fur is water-repellent like a rain coat so it does not become all that wet although it lives in humid areas. It is also adept at swimming and it can lie in the water with only its snout above water in order to hide from predators.

At Odense ZOO, we imitate nature as best we can so we have given the sitatunga surroundings resembling a swamp area.
