Arowanas are omnivorous. They spend most of the time near the water surface and catch fish swimming at this level. Their eyes can rotate up and down. They look very angry, but their “frowning” mouth enables them to grab onto fish from below. This downward shape is also a practical advantage when they jump out of the water to catch insects. They can jump up to 2 metres over the water.
At Odense Zoo, they have been seen catching ducklings and even an adult duck!
