Pelicans are among the biggest and heaviest birds that can fly. With their sharp eyesight, they can spot fish from high above and dive down and catch them. When the pelican catches food in this manner, a lot of water enters its throat pouch. The throat pouch can hold up to 13 liters. The water flows back through the throat pouch so only the fish remains.
When pelicans hunt as a group, they gather in a semicircle and flap their wings while they swim towards land. This way, the fish are scared into shallow water where they are easier
to catch.
