The male lion is strong and has an impressive mane. However, it is a bit lazy compared to the females that spend more time and effort chasing prey in the pursuit of food.
The females are related to each other and stay together their entire lives. The adult male lions are sort of visitors which only stay with the herd for 2-3 years to impregnate the females and defend their place in relation to the other male lions.
At Odense ZOO, we feed the lions with whole animals as well as pieces so they do not fight each other over the food. The fur is left on the meat, as it would be in nature. This way, we can ensure good dental hygiene and the animals’ well-being.
