Hyacinth macaw

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus

The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot species in the world with a length of about 100 cm. Macaws live in flocks and form close bonds. They are often very loyal to their partners. They hollow out trees to build their nest and raise the chicks together.

The Hyacinth Macaw is known for its loud noises which is useful when they communicate with each other in the depth of the rainforest.

The Hyacinth Macaw is an endangered species. Hunting for feathers and destruction of their natural habitat are the main reasons for the declining number of Hyacinth Macaws.

Odense ZOO take part in European Endangered Species Programmes (EEP) and collaborate
with other zoos to protect the endangered birds.
