Henkel’s leaf-tailed gecko

Uroplatus henkeli

Henkel’s leaf-tailed geckos are masters of camouflage. Their skin colour can vary quite a bit, but all variations help them blend perfectly with the bark of trees.

Along their bodies, they have fringed skin that lies flat against surfaces, making them even harder to spot.

Henkel’s leaf-tailed geckos live on Madagascar and are active at night. They spend most of their lives in trees, typically hanging upside down on the trunks.

The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) manages the species’ studbook to help maintain a healthy and genetically diverse population in zoos.
