With its long body and neck, the giraffe is the world’s highest land-based animal. It eats juicy acacia leaves which it tears off with its tongue and lips.
Giraffes live in herds so that they can help each other keep a look out for enemies. Because the giraffes are so tall, it is easy for them to discover predators, so adult giraffes
rarely end their lives as prey. The giraffe is, nevertheless, an endangered species because
we as people turn their habitats on the savannah into farms, cities and roads.
There are 9 subspecies of giraffe. At Odense ZOO, we have reticulated giraffes known for their distinctive mesh pattern.
