Abdim’s Stork

Ciconia abdimii

Abdim’s Stork was originally named after a Turkish governor in Sudan, and it is the world’s smallest stork. It is a white-bellied black stork with grey legs and red knees. Its skin around its eyes and beak is blue and red.

The stork is rarely seen in flocks of less than ten. It breeds in colonies of up to 20 pairs and may use the same nest for many years.

Abdim’s Stork follows the African rainy season and moves over great distances. You may be lucky and see flocks of up to 10,000 storks. According to popular belief in Africa, Abdim’s Stork brings the rain with it and has thus been given the nickname ‘the bringer of rain’.
