While it's true that tarantulas can grow large, they don't actually get quite as big as the one that's taken up residence in Bøgetoppen.
Its English name is ornate tiger spider – and for the nerds among you: Poecilotheria ornata in Latin.
The spider lives in the trees of Sri Lanka, where the largest females can grow up to 25 centimetres from tip to tip – roughly the same size as a dinner plate!
It isn’t deadly to humans, but it is venomous, so being bitten can be really painful. Fortunately, it mainly hunts insects such as beetles and grasshoppers.
Unfortunately, this species isn’t faring too well in the wild. The trees and areas where it lives are being cleared, and it is therefore endangered.
