Tonkin bug-eyed frog

Theloderma corticale

Tonkin bug-eyed frogs are masters of camouflage. Their green, textured skin makes them look exactly like patches of moss, which means they’re almost impossible to spot when they sit still.

Tonkin bug-eyed frogs belong to the genus Theloderma — a group of tree frogs currently known to include 28 different species, all referred to as moss frogs. However, not every species has moss-like skin. In fact, some have skin patterns that resemble bird droppings.

More species of moss frogs are found in Vietnam than anywhere else in the world — a total of 16 species. Vietnam is truly a biodiversity hotspot for amphibians. Scientists have identified 275 amphibian species in the country, 95 of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
