Hadada ibis

Bostrychia hagedash

“Haa-haa-haa-daa!”

That’s the sound you’ll often hear when a hadada ibis is nearby — and it’s what gave the bird its name. Its distinctive call can be very loud and is used for communication, especially to warn others of potential danger.

The hadada ibis is found across most of sub-Saharan Africa and isn’t picky about where it lives. It can thrive just as well in a city park as in a remote wetland.

Its long, curved bill is perfectly adapted for probing into the soil in search of tasty larvae and snails.
