Green basilisks are also known as Jesus lizards because they are famous for their ability to run across water over short distances. Special scales on their feet, combined with their speed, make this possible.
When running on their hind legs, they can reach speeds of up to 1.5 metres per second. Typically, they can run about 4.5 metres across the water before they sink and start swimming. They are excellent swimmers and can remain submerged for up to 30 minutes.
Male and female green basilisks look different. Males have four prominent crests along their body, while females have only a small single crest on the head.
Both sexes share a vivid green colour that allows them to blend perfectly into the surrounding vegetation.
