The original colour of the cockatiel is grey. Breeding efforts have resulted in many different varieties, such as silvery and white albino cockatiels. The males have a lemon-coloured head and a black tail. The females have yellow stripes on the ventral side of the tail.
Cockatiels breed in hollow tree trunks. Other parakeets and cockatoos can also breed in the hole, if there is enough room. Unlike other parakeets, the male and female cockatiel take turns sitting on the eggs. The male sits during the day and the female at night while the male guards the nest.
