The emu cannot fly. On the other hand, it is a very fast runner (50 km/h). It defends itself by kicking and scratching with its long claws.
The male is in charge of sitting on the eggs and raising the chicks. Several females lay eggs in the same nest within a few days. During the brooding period, the male often does not eat at all and can lose about 8 kg in weight.
There is no visible difference between the males and females. The male will occasionally emit a cry of “e-mooo”, which can be heard far away. During mating season, the female emits some deep, drumming sounds.
