Lions differ from all other felines by living in prides. The females dominate the pride, raise the cubs and hunt prey. The males are responsible for impregnating the females and protecting the pride from other males. The females are closely related, because they have all born been in the pride and remain in the pride until death. The entire pride – comprising grandmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters and nieces – live within a territory whose size depends on the number of prey. Normally, the pride’s adult males are not related to the lionesses. In reality, they are merely viewed as guests! Males mate with a pride's females and protect the pride for only 2–3 years.
