The eastern white pelican is one of the largest pelican species, as the males can weigh up to 15 kg and have a wingspread of 3.6 m. This considerable size enables eastern whites to eat large fish weighing up to 600 g.

During mating season, the head-plumage colours of the male and female differ: the male’s plumage turns pink/yellow while the female’s turns orange. They lay 1–3 eggs in a nest on the ground. The eggs hatch after 29–36 days. The chicks have no down for a few days after hatching and are ready to fly when they are about 70 days old.
