The demoiselle crane is the smallest of the fifteen different cranes found in the whole world. It is one of the only cranes (along with the blue crane) without red feathers or red patches of skin on its head.

It lives primarily on a diet of grass seed and other vegetable matter, but also eats insects – chiefly beetles – as well as worms and other small vertebrates. The crane’s diet makes the savannah a fine habitat, usually near rivers and lakes. It can also live in desert regions if water is nearby.
It is an occasional nuisance on cultivated fields.

Besides Africa, where the demoiselle crane’s habitat range is a narrow belt to the south-east of the Equator, it is also found in India and Russia.
