Yellow-headed poison dart frog
Dendrobates leucomelas
The female lays 4 to 8 eggs under a pile of leaves on land. The male defends the eggs: he keeps the area around the eggs clean, rearranges the eggs with his hind legs and keeps them moist. The eggs hatch after 10–14 days. Each tadpole crawls up onto the male’s back, and he safely carries them one by one to nearby waterholes.
The male has a characteristic call reminiscent of chirping birds
