Macraw (Scarlet Macaw)
Ara macao
Macaws are often seen together in large flocks in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. They are capable of cracking very hard nutshells (such as Brazil nuts) with their powerful beaks.
Macaws build nests in hollow trees and use the same hole year after year. Macaws are highly endangered due to the logging of rainforests, the sale of their beautiful feathers as souvenirs and the illegal capture of the birds for the pet industry.
